Back in October, the Lord blessed me with an opportunity to speak at a Ladies Day event in FL. Here is my lesson. Grab your Bible and join me as we study what it means to be not only His Princess, but His Warrior….
What is a Princess?
God has blessed me with 2 beautiful daughters and because of that, Disney Princess themes and characters fill my house daily! Belle, Aurora, Sophia, Elena, Ariel, Elsa… I could go on and on!
My sweet girls love to imitate these characters; put on their costumes and prance around the house singing the princess songs. But looking pretty and singing sweet tunes to lure a prince or woodland creature really has nothing to do with being a princess.
The heart of a true princess is full of compassion, and her hands are ready to do what needs to be done. I am so thankful God’s Word is clear about the beautiful heart of a princess. But before we go there, let’s start at the beginning.
What makes a princess? She must either be born or marry into royalty. In the case of the Christian, we become part of His bride, the Church when we are born again, a new creation in Christ. God’s princess. Let’s quickly go to John 3:3-5.
And Romans 6:3-4 “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
Romans 8:1-2 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death…. (vs 15) For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”…(vs 17)and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…”
And now 1 Peter 2:9 “but you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
Now I know I ran over a lot of verses and if you are new to the Bible or to the Church, you may have some questions. Come up to me at break time and I will be happy to give you my email so we can dive deeper into this area! But I am assuming most of you are already in the Kingdom, my sweet sisters, so now we are going to get into the meat of this lesson! J
So.. I’m a princess. Now what? Now it’s time to act like one. When you think about a princess, what characteristics come to mind? Urbandictionary.com gives a list for the qualities of a princess, that I feel is right on target.
Noble—dignified, strong moral character, upright, righteous, etc. Someone who does the right thing, in any situation.
1 Timothy 6:11 “But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness…”
Proverbs 31:25 “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” I see this laughter as joy, fearless, grace, and class. You know the women who never seem to worry? Do you know anyone like that? I can think of a couple. And they are beautiful women! Who are confident in their Lord… but now I’m getting ahead of myself 😉
A princess is, Selfless—Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” When I think of selfless, I think Jesus. The ultimate example of pure humility and selflessness. Everything He did, had a purpose GREATER than Himself: to honor the will of God. I am merely human, but my purpose, as a joint heir of Christ (remember Romans 8:17?), is to also do the will of my Father. To put the needs of others above my own. And when I do that for Him, He will blow my mind with His blessings.
Trusting—this one got me thinking. Trusting can be twisted or misunderstood to be synonymous with naïve. But that depends on one thing: in Whom do you place your trust? Being God’s princess warriors, we trust our Father, King, and Commander. We trust His promises and His providence. And we will be at peace when our hearts undoubtedly put our faith and trust in Him.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths.”
Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
A princess is Humble—James 4:6b “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 3:8-9 “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.”
Humility and selflessness are so close together in my mind. But you know, one can be selfless and entirely proud and boastful of the works they are doing for others. Have you known someone like that? Have you been someone like that? I’m ashamed to say that I have. “Well… I would love to come to your house to visit, but I have to go do this for someone… she’s called like 4 times…” or “I really can’t afford this, but I know you need it more than me…” or “Can you believe they asked me to (you name it), but I of course did it anyway…” Women. Sisters. That is NOT the princess way. We are to only boast in our Lord and what HE has done for us; never what we have done for others. (see Eph. 2:8-9 and Gal. 6:14)
True princess prowess is the union of humility and selflessness.
Kind—Proverbs 31:20, 26 “She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy…she opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching off kindness is on her tongue.”
Eph. 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Kindness. Each day we need to ask God to help us be kind. Kindness is one of the marks of a Christ follower, one filled with the Spirit of God (Gal. 5:22). And just as much as a kind word or action from someone can brighten your day, a negative or ugly encounter can ruin it. As God’s people, His princesses, people need to feel blessed when they have an interaction with us. They need to be able to stop and say “wow. That made my day!” or “She could’ve been so ugly to me after the way I treated her. But she wasn’t. Why?” Sisters, we are a peculiar people. When we rub shoulders with the world, the world should have to step back and wonder why on earth we are different.
Respectful and admiring of her prince—this quality is 2-fold. On the one-hand, for those of us who are married, our husbands are our princes. And you know what they love? They love when we look at them with adoration and respect. The look that says, “you can do anything, baby!” Now, can they do anything? No. Probably not. But they need to know that we are behind them. We support them. We will encourage and support them. It is so important, ladies, that our husbands see and feel that from us. Now, I said this point was 2-fold. Who is our REAL prince? Jesus! Our bride-groom. Who deserves our adoration and allegiance? Jesus. His way. Every day. That takes submission and obedience. And practice in all of these Princess attributes. But sister, it is worth every bit of submission because each small act of obedience brings us closer and closer to perfect unity with Christ.
Now, let’s talk about warriors! What is a warrior? It’s easy to say “I’m a princess! I’m a daughter of the king!” but to say “I’m a warrior. A soldier in God’s army.” Well that’s a little scary. Soldiers are tough! The training they go through is intense to say the least. Am I up for that?
According to paradigm.org (a random website I stumbled across), A spiritual warrior is “someone who embraces courage, compassion, discipline, and training to master one’s own alter-ego.”
Well you know what that makes me think of? Turn to Galatians 5:16-17. (read that.) Now flip over to Romans 7:14-19. (read it) What a war. A constant inner battle. Sometimes it feels like a losing battle; Satan wants it to feel like a losing battle. But the One who is IN YOU is GREATER than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4) That should give us SO MUCH COURAGE sister! “For God did NOT give us a spirit of fear or timidity, but of power and love and self-discipline.” 2 Tim. 1:7
So, let’s talk about how we can be warriors in addition to Princesses.
A warrior is made, not born. Every day choosing the mission over myself and selfish glory.
I love that Proverb 22:6 uses the word “train.” “Train up a child in the way he should go…” Simply lecturing or teaching, isn’t enough. We must train. Day in and day out. Like an athlete trains for a goal. According to dictionary.com an athlete is a person trained, or gifted, in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength…
Have you seen the show American ninja warrior? The basic primase is that athletes from all over the country compete on a super difficult obstacle course. They train from what they’ve seen on the show in years past, but come competition day, they don’t know what obstacles they’ll see. They must be extremely well trained in agility, stamina, and strength so that they are fully prepared for what’s to come.
Are you seeing the spiritual parallel’s yet? The apostle Paul uses athletic analogies often because we are physical people trying to see life through God’s spiritual filter. So what can we learn from studying or being athletes (not forgetting 1 Tim. 4:8—Godliness holds the highest value)?
Hebrews 12:11– “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
Warriors train like athletes and fight for a cause. The cause of God’s princess is Christ. Our fight is for Him and through His strength. We train in godliness and our battleground is our own front yard.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Eph. 6:12
Can I just be His princess and not His warrior? Turn with me to 1 Cor. 9:24-27. I will be a fighter. I will be a warrior for Him, because this is the most important race to run, and if I stop? Disqualified. So… “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 3:14
Princesses can be born in a moment, but we must train to be His warriors. Every day, denying ourselves and taking up the cross of Christ. Only then will we be able to say in our final days “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing.” 2 Tim. 4:7-8
